On Work

Work is sometimes viewed as a grueling task that many people do not enjoy. I would have to agree with many people. But, there are 5 things that I enjoy about working. Here are my 5 reasons why I enjoy working (at my job)

1. It gives you a reason the get out of the house!

Who wants to wake up at the crack of dawn to get ready for work? Not me! But I would rather wake up and get ready for work than wake up and get ready to watch TV alone. I know it kind of sucks at first, but once you’re up and out the house, the (sometimes) fresh air entering your lungs and the thought that you are needed somewhere is a good feeling. Which brings me to #2…

2. It boosts your self-esteem!

I know you might disagree and hit me with the proverbial “self-esteem should come from within” statement, but I disagree. External stimuli have a great effect on how we feel about ourselves, especially when it comes to our goals and accomplishments. And what better place to realize to realize our goals and ackowledge accomplishments than at work? I feel great at the end of the day when I know I did a good job and was recognized for doing a good job. I guess that’s one reason why some people are so motivated to go to a job they hate - it could make them feel goooood.

3. You get to meet new people and gain new perspectives!

Even at a fast food job, which can be considered one of the most mundane work experiences, there are so many different types of people. Everybody is different and I appreciate the fact that some work places celebrate diversity. It would suck to work around the same type of person all the time, whether it is their mentality or culture. And who knows, you might meet new friends! That’s a plus.

4. You get experience!

Learning is very important to me, so I appreciate every job I ever had. No matter how small or pointless as it seemed (I once worked as a library page), I always learned something - whether it was organizational skills or how to communicate better to people - that would be useful in the future. The skills we gain today will be used tomorrow.

And last but not least…

5. You get paid!

Money to support your lifestyle and hobbies is a great thing. No matter how much you get paid, at least you know you earned it. Or maybe you didn’t earn it.. whatever the case may be, the money will be flowing so long as you don’t eff it up. And by eff it up I mean be lazy. Or rude. Or (incorrigibly) incompetant. So don’t eff it up!

Oh yeah, there is a bonus reason: You can get drunk after a hard week’s work and not feel bad about it! Let the Jameson sink in and drink your rough week away!

Well, that’s my bit for the day. I hope you folks get some advice (or a laugh) out of this!

Cheers to the freakin’ life! JJR
